If I have to I'll buy into a Kontakt-based VI since that's my platform, and I can at least do a little something with the content in terms of new programming, even if I can't easily get at the samples themselves. It's especially bothersome when a vendor takes a perfectly good open format library and make it 'better' by wrapping it in a closed, proprietary playback engine. And especially when said VI requires a dongle.

Personally I'm not a big fan of closed sample libraries in VI form, especially on a platform that is more or less proprietary. * Yellowtools used to have a multi-format sample bass library (two volumes I think), which I believe was the basis for their proprietary VI product called Majestic.

Also needs the full kontakt, but also contains some cool kontakt scripting! Check out the demos on that page. There's a large 4GB 96kHz version and a cheaper 44kHz version. If you spring for the 'bundle' you also get an acoustic and an acoustic-electric, which come in handy for those throwback 'MTV Unplugged' sessions from 1993! I'm more comfortable layering things via modwheel and/or across the keyboard. I've been meaning to program some more extensive performance patches in WusikStation since I'm not a big keyswitch guy, but haven't gotten around to it. The different soundsets are loaded in up to 4 slots of the player interface (Wusik-based), and activated through keyswitches. Unfortunately I haven't had any time to really spend with it since I bought it! Definately check out the MP3 demos, lots of variety there. This has some good tones, quality, and variety, especially for the price.

You could always load the library in the full version of Kontakt to get around any legacy bug issues - BTW, with any kontakt-based library (kompakt, intakt, kontakt player, etc.) you can crossgrade to the full sampler for relatively cheap, e.g. One potential problem with that particular product is Kompakt, which is basically the previous gen kontakt engine, and which might give you problems that were subsequently fixed in subsequent kontakt engine versions. Has a nice selection of basses (fender, rick, musicman, hofner, etc.), but I don't know what it has in the way of slap, since I don't own it. This is a Ko mpakt player library (predecessor to Kontakt Player libs), and one of the first comprehensive, massive, dedicated sample libs from a few years ago. At least one instrument in the lib must contain the player so that you can authorize the lib, but after that you can just buy the instrument patches/samples from the same lib as addons.

For example you could buy just the picked patch with the Kontakt player, then buy the slapped patch as an 'extension' with a discount. Chris Hein is also making his libs downloadable, which is good if you just want one or two without dropping $500 on a massive library. No finger patches on the stingray though, only picked and slapped. I actually bought the whole lib on sale when it first came out just for the acoustics and the fretless, but it also has a musicman stingray that might give slightly heavier sound (esp. This is a Kontakt Player libary, so you don't need the full sampler. IMO his 'Slap Demo 4' - is about as close to sounding like an actual instrument as I think you'll find in a multi-sample library. Both Black and Red Bass products are Kontakt libs, so you'd need the full kontakt to use them. He'll soon be releasing Blue Bass, which looks to be a Fender model, and using the same advanced scripting.

He then went back and applied the same scripting technology to the original JSF and came up with Red Bass, which you can upgrade to for a modest sum being an owner of the original. Check out his Black Bass (there's a video demo), which is a different bass than the JSF bass, and which was created as a Kontakt instrument from the ground up with extensive realtime playablity via kontakt scripting. I ask because scarbee has really taken his bass products to the next level in terms of playability. One question: do you have kontakt as well, or only halion? J, there's a few options out there, but I think scarbee's original J-Slap 'n Fingered might be the most comprehensive available, in terms of articulation and detail. When i need to record electric bass sounds i use the Halion version of ' Scarbee J-Slap'n Fingered ' (which sounds realy good imho) but i'd realy like to know if there was some other (and hopefuly better) VSTi/DXi with fingered ans slaped electric bass sound ?
